Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Knife Review

If you know your knives, you should probably be aware that the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is one of the best everyday carries or EDCs available in the market today. The Colorado-based company has been making knives since 1976 when it launched the spider-shaped Portable Hand. Since then, the cutlery company has offered some uniquely designed products with great functions.

The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 has a 3.4-inch blade with a closed length of 4.8 inches and a total open length of 8.5 inches. It weighs around 3.75 ounces, and costs in medium price range.

The average EDC weighs somewhere between 4 to 5 ounces, making the earlier Spyderco Paramilitary 2 really portable as it weighed less than 4 ounces.

The clip-point stainless steel blade is not as thick as other EDCs, but it is pointed enough for piercing and sharp enough for cutting tasks. In fact, the knife can be aptly described as a jack of all trades; it is not particularly strong, but it does most things pretty well.

The 14mm hole on the blade is used for flicking the knife open, and it is actually a really comfortable system. When compared to the usual thumb stud system, there is no risk of your thumb slipping because of lack of grip. A single flick with your thumb can instantly open the blade safely.

When open, the handle and the blade merge together to form a comfortable front choil with jimping for added grip for your finger. This makes it easier for you to use the knife for precision tasks. The back end of the blade right behind the hole also has a thumb supporting curve with jimping.

The handle is actually rather thin and is made of G10. The liners do not go all the way through the length of the handle, and some of them are nested in the G10 material. This design, along with the material itself, reduces the weight of the knife considerably. The handle has a curved design that should fit in the palm of your hand really well.

The blade uses CPM-S30V high-carbon stainless steel, which is really good steel that keeps its sharp for a very long time. It is a great type of steel for EDCs. The compression lock is different from the usual locking mechanisms, so it takes a little time to get used to, but there is no issue related to safety. The blade locks really firmly too, and you can disengage and fold open or close the blade in one swift motion.

Pros and Cons:

The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 knife is light enough to be carried around easily, large enough to stay in your pocket without moving too much, and has good ergonomics with the really easy and safe folding mechanism. It looks unique as well, but the flipside is its cost.

At its price, this is definitely not your average value EDC. It has 55 reviews on Amazon.com, 48 of which are 5-star reviews, 4 are 4-star reviews, and two are 3-star reviews. According to one reviewer, Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is an excellent knife and my absolute favorite.
